What is a drive-in rack? As a consumer, how can you further understand the advantages and disadvantages of the drive-in rack and whether it is suitable for your storage space? How to select the drive-in shelves according to your own needs?

What is a drive-in rack?

Drive in racking or drive-in shelves is a storage system that maximizes the available warehouse space, making it difficult for immediate access. These shelves can be as deep as a dozen pallets and as high as six or seven pallets, although the selectivity decreases with more complex systems. Shelf actuation maximizes the efficiency of warehouses that handle large amounts of inventory, and in some cases only partial conversion to such storage is optimal. In the drive-in rack system, each row of pallets is equipped with a guide rail instead of a beam. Operators using forklifts can drive-in shelving system and place the first pallet at the end of the lane, hence the name "drive-in" rack. Then he can put another tray behind the first tray, and so on. The process of unloading pallets is similar. It is worth noting that if pallets behind the row must be removed, the operator must first reposition all pallets in front of it.

In this way, drive in racking system is organized as FILO (first in first out) access, which can be detrimental in some industries or in warehouses where orders are picked from pallets. Otherwise, a drive brought to the shelf saves a lot of space and is ideal for storing a large number of pallets per SKU of the same product. To improve accessibility issues, drive-in rack can be designed to have two entry capabilities, or they can drive the entire rack. The latter is particularly useful in warehouses dealing with products with short shelf life because it helps organize inventory on a FIFO (first-in, first-out) basis, thus avoiding large inventory losses. For this type of system, the number of aisles required would be greatly reduced, with forklifts requiring up to 3.5m of net space per aisle and counterweights requiring up to 4.5m of net space.

The purpose and advantages of the drive in racking

1.The drive in the pallet rack is one of the most intensive storage systems available. It can hold up to 12 pallets and up to 7 pallets, which is unmatched by any other form of storage. Because fewer channels are required to operate the system, it also clears up additional ground space.

2. A typical drive in racking system with one or two entries provides FILO based accessibility and is not suitable for warehouses that handle products with limited shelf life. However, for perishable industries, shelf transport is a viable option because it can manage FIFO inventory if properly organised.

3. Making sure that temperature control is very expensive in the warehouse area is why, as the warehouse manager, you want to take advantage of every available inch of space. Drive-in shelving can help you achieve this better than any other storage alternative currently on the market.

4. Drive in racking are one of the most affordable storage solutions in terms of cost per pallet. It helps warehouse managers save space, save money, and ensure that expensive areas of the warehouse (such as those that provide cooling) are used for maximum capacity. Overall, the drive-in rack are well suited for handling a large number of pallets per SKU, but for product integrity reasons a block-stacked warehouse is not an option. They are also cost-effective and can hold large loads when used in combination with cold storage or freeze-type storage.

Is there any defect in the drive in racking?

1.Unless you choose to drive through a rack, the drive in racking system will only allow access to FILO, increasing the risk that products with a short shelf life will be damaged when they are removed from storage.

2. The second problem with FILO inventory management is that picking can be very slow if orders are completed from the tray. Therefore, drive-in shelving is appropriate only if a set of pallets can be organized to contain a SKU instead of a SKU. Otherwise, the time it takes the operator to pick up the cargo from the pallet stored at the back of the driveway will make the entire system unworkable.

3. The drive-in shelving are cost-effective in terms of cost per pallet, but overall, the initial investment to convert to such a system can be expensive. Investments range from $35 to $55 per pallet, depending on each configuration.

4. For us, security is the most important consideration when designing any type of rack system. For rack drivers, however, this requires extra special attention. Since the forklift driver must always be in the racking system to load or unload goods, it would be a terrible disaster if the racking collapsed while he or she was still in the car. Therefore, when operating the driver within the rack system, safety components such as prop protectors (to prevent damage from a forklift hitting the rack column) and floor rails must be used to guide the driver.

What are the factors to consider when choosing a drive-in rack?

1.The first step is to check the space and determine if there is a major need for shelves or shelves. For larger areas, larger items or higher product flows, industrial warehouse shelves may be the most efficient and efficient option.

2. The next step is to determine which style shelving or combination of styles is the best solution for your space. Shelf areas in industrial warehouses need not be restricted to one type or size. There are many options to choose from - exploring all options is the best way to customize your warehouse to maximize your industrial space.
