Drive-In Rack Systems: Maximizing Storage Density

Drive-in racks offer an excellent solution for maximizing warehouse storage density, particularly for businesses with large quantities of identical items or pallets that can be placed on a first-in, last-out (FILO) inventory basis. By dramatically increasing the number of pallets stored per square foot compared to selective pallet racks, they efficiently utilize available cubic space, leading to significant cost savings on real estate and building size.

The fundamental design principle of a drive-in rack system allows forklift operators to drive directly into the structure itself. Instead of the horizontal load beams found in traditional racking, load rails running the depth of the bay act as the support structure. Pallets are stored one deep and multiple pallets high in the same bay, one directly behind another. Guide rails direct the forklift into each deep lane.

This configuration permits exceptional storage depth. Warehouses with consistent pallet sizes and high-volume throughput for specific SKUs (Stock Keeping Units) find drive-in racks highly effective. They are perfect for storing seasonal goods, raw materials, or finished products where inventory turnover is predictable based on the FILO principle.
