What Is a Shuttle Racking System?
A shuttle racking system stores pallets in deep lanes, where a powered shuttle moves loads along dedicated rails. In a semi-automated radio shuttle configuration, forklifts place pallets at the lane entrance and transfer the shuttle between lanes, while the shuttle handles pallet movement inside the rack.
NOVA also offers four-way shuttle and automated storage solutions. The appropriate system depends on your storage layout, pallet flow, throughput requirements, and planned level of automation.
How Radio Shuttle Racking Works
In a semi-automated radio shuttle system, forklifts handle pallets at the lane entrance, while a powered shuttle transports them inside the rack. This reduces forklift travel within deep storage lanes.
Position the Shuttle
A forklift places the shuttle onto the rails of the selected lane. The operator checks its position and readiness before starting the loading task.
Load the Pallet
The forklift places a compatible pallet at the lane entrance. Once the forklift is clear, the operator activates the shuttle to collect the load.
Store the Pallet
The shuttle lifts the pallet, moves it along the rails, and lowers it onto the rack supports at the storage position. It then returns for the next task.
Retrieve the Pallet
The shuttle collects the required pallet and brings it to the unloading point for forklift pickup. FIFO layouts typically use opposite ends for loading and unloading, while LIFO layouts use the same end.
Shuttle Rack Application Scenarios
Shuttle racking is suitable for palletized goods that benefit from deep-lane storage. Each layout should reflect the number of pallets per SKU, stock rotation requirements, and daily handling volume.

High-Volume Warehouse Storage
Store larger quantities of palletized goods within a compact storage area. Deep-lane configurations are particularly useful when each SKU has enough pallets to make effective use of the allocated lanes.
Plan lane depth around pallet quantities per SKU.
Match storage capacity to incoming and outgoing volumes.
Retain suitable access for forklift loading and unloading.
Food, Beverage, and Cold Storage
Organize palletized food and beverage inventory around batch control and stock rotation requirements. For cold storage projects, shuttle components and batteries must be selected for the intended operating temperature.
Configure FIFO or LIFO layouts to match inventory needs.
Confirm temperature requirements before equipment selection.
Check pallet condition and load stability for reliable handling.

Logistics and Distribution Centers
Support bulk pallet storage and buffering between receiving and dispatch. The appropriate shuttle configuration depends on SKU distribution, peak handling demand, and the required level of automation.
Assess peak inbound and outbound pallet movements.
Balance storage density with retrieval requirements.
Evaluate radio shuttle or four-way shuttle configurations.
Shuttle Rack Business Advantages
High-Density Pallet Storage
Deep storage lanes reduce the number of access aisles required within the storage block, helping warehouses allocate more space to pallet positions.
Efficient In-Lane Handling
The shuttle transports pallets along the storage lane, reducing the distance forklifts need to travel inside the rack. Actual handling performance depends on lane depth, shuttle allocation, and the overall workflow.
Reduced Forklift Entry
Forklifts operate at the lane entrance rather than driving through the storage lanes. This helps reduce exposure to rack collisions associated with forklift movement inside the structure.
Configurable Inventory Flow
Layouts can be designed for FIFO or LIFO operation. The appropriate arrangement depends on loading and unloading access, product rotation requirements, and warehouse space.
